WISH - While I'm Still Here: The Goodbye I Get to Give - Rev. Dr. William Dixon

In this most powerful and blessed episode, Rev. Dr. William Dixon candidly shares how the Lord helped him to recognize the call on his life. He also shares his deep passion and love for families in crisis and end of life events.

Dr. Dixon was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. He is the oldest of ten children. He was raised by a single mother. He remembers his mother sending them to church as children. At the time, the church was walking distance from their home. At about the age of nine, a minister introduced him to Jesus Christ. Although he stopped attending church, nevertheless, during his senior year in high school, he started attending church regularly.

At about the age of 26, Dr. Dixon recommitted his life to Christ and was baptized. He lived in San Antonio, Texas for awhile, but eventually moved back to Virginia in the 1990s. Dr. Dixon answered the call to ministry and was licensed in 1992. He was ordained in 2001 and served as assistant pastor for 8 years.

Dr. Dixon is a compassionate and seasoned spiritual care leader. He has over 30 years of ministerial service and more than a decade of experience as a board-certified professional chaplain. Most recently he served as the Palliative Care Chaplain at Inova Fairfax Medical Center, he provides critical support to patients and families navigating complex end-of-life decisions while leading interdisciplinary care teams in a high-acuity trauma setting.

With a deep passion for human connection, palliative care, and bioethics, Dr. Dixon has dedicated his life to walking alongside individuals during some of their most vulnerable moments. His clinical experience spans leading hospitals and hospice organizations, including Ohio State University (Wexner Medical Center), University of Virginia Medical Center, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he completed his chaplain residency in the Palliative Care Unit.

Dr. Dixon holds a Doctor of Ministry focused on end-of-life and pastoral care, a Master of Divinity, and a Master of Legal Studies in Bioethics. A contributing author to the Textbook of Palliative Care Communication, he is also trained in pediatric palliative care facilitation, ethics consultation, and crisis intervention.

Guided by empathy, advocacy, and ethical integrity, William Kevin Dixon continues to shape spiritual care with a focus on dignity, equity, and healing at life’s most sacred thresholds.

Dr. Dixon and his wife Chana co-authored the book WISH: While I'm Still Here The Goodbye I Get to Give. They have four beautiful daughters and two amazing grandchildren.
